February 7, 2010
Savannah, Ga- The Brenau softball team opened their season with a bang yesterday by winning two games, first defeating #23 Savannah College of Art and Design 9-5 in eight innings and then coming back to beat NCAA II Armstrong Atlantic 4-2. Not only did it provide the margin of victory, but it was the first homer in Sparrow's career. Sophomore Morgan Smith also had a grand slam in that game, going 2-3 and Ellen Black had two doubles in three at bats. Freshman Anna Manness was the winning pitcher, collecting two strikeouts on the day.In the second game, Black went the distance on the mound and struck out four. She also had a three run homer. Taylor Kelly went 2-3, including a double and Tiffany Schandera had a double in two plate appearances. The Tigers turned three double plays on the day with outstanding defense against two quality opponents. "Considering the fact that we lost so much from last year's championship team, I thought our young players were outstanding against two very good teams," said Coach Devon Thomas. Brenau will play two more games today, first against Montreat, NC at 10 am and squaring off with SCAD again at 2 pm.
