Brenau Softball Sweeps Truett McConnell

Gainesville, GA- The Brenau softball team opened the home portion of their season in a big way by sweeping the Truett McConnell Bears 19-0 (5) and 12-2 (5) at the Lanier Point Softball Complex yesterday. The Tigers run their season record to 5-1 with the only loss to #23 SCAD, a team they also defeated in Savannah last week. In the first game, Freshman Anna Maness went the distance on the mound, spinning a two hitter with five strikeouts. The offensive firepower was led by Sophomores Morgan Smith, who hit a double and her third home run of the year to drive in six runs, and Ellen Black, who also stroked a homer to drive in three runs.Brooke Bryant and Taylor Kelley also had two hits with Bryant driving in two runs and Kelley stealing a base. Smith, Bryant, Tiffany Shandera and Sarah Applegarth all hit doubles in the rout. Black took over the pitching duties in game two and struck out five, allowing five hits. Kelley hit her first collegiate home run, going 2-3 and driving in two. Shandera had two hits and drove in three runs, Maness had three RBI's and Black and Bryant had two hits apiece. The Tigers will now take a ten day break before returning to action at Columbia to open SSAC play.
