April 13, 2010
Gainesville, Ga- After being shut out 4-0 in the first game of a SSAC doubleheader, the #12 Brenau softball team roared back in the second game to win 6-4 over #19 Auburn Montgomery. With the win, the Tigers maintain their grip on second place in the SSAC with a 17-6-1 record and the Lady Senators remain in fourth place at 17-8-1. Brenau pushes their overall mark to 26-9-1 and AUM drops to 31-14-1.
The first game was a pitcher's dual for the first six innings as BU scratched out three hits against All Conference pitcher Brandi Richards and AUM managed just two hits off Freshman Anna Maness. The visitors did all their damage in the top of the seventh with three singles and two doubles to account for their four runs.
AUM picked up their first run in Game Two with two hits, but Tiffany Schandera opened up the bottom of the inning with a lead off home run and Caitlin Kelly followed that up with a two run single to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead after one inning. Schandera reached base on a bunt single in the second and Morgan Smith drove her in with a flyout at the fence in centerfield. Sarah Applegarth stroked a RBI double and BU had a 5-1 lead after two.
Sophomore Ellen Black ran into trouble in the fourth as AUM picked up three quick runs to push the score to 5-4, forcing a pitching change as Maness came in to put out the fire. Schandera scored her third run of the game in the bottom of the inning after walking and stealing second. Kelly picked up her second hit of the game in the fifth inning and Maness shut down AUM the rest of the way to earn the save and preserve Black's win.
Next up for Brenau will be an SSAC matchup at Emmanuel on the 19th.
