Senior Day Successful for Softball

Gainesville, Ga- The #11 Brenau softball team made sure they sent their three seniors off in style by winning their final two home games of the season, defeating Columbia, SC, 11-2 (5) and 9-1 (6). The Tigers ran their conference record to 19-6-1, good enough for second place, and their season mark to 28-9-1. The Koalas dropped to 8-20, 9-25. Senior Sarah Applegarth (Gainesville) made the most of her final appearance at home, going 3-7 from the plate with 4 RBIs and a two run homer in the fourth inning of the second game. Colleen Sparrow (Saanich, BC) also picked up a hit and had several outstanding defensive plays from her second base position, and Caitlin Kelly (Bozeman, MT) had a good day at her first base position.
Tiffany Schandera continued her hot streak at the plate, going 5-7 with a whopping six RBIs and a two run homer in the third inning of game one.
Freshman Taylor Kelley, who is just off the injured list, had a big day with two RBIs on 5-6 from the plate and Ellen Black went 4-7, driving in three runs including a walk off homer to end the second game in the bottom of the sixth inning. Black also pitched the second game, striking out three to get the win.
Morgan Smith opened up the first game with a two run homer to extend her own season school record to 12. She also got two other hits to go 3-4 on the day. Brooke Bryant and Austin Smith also collected a couple of hits on the day as the Tigers pounded out a total of 26 hits, including four home runs.
Brenau will travel to Shorter on Friday for a critical series that could decide second place in the conference, and follow that up with a trip to Brewton Parker on Saturday.
