Brenau Softball Goes Undefeated at Shorter Invitational

Rome, GA - The Brenau softball team showed their incredible depth and talent by sweeping all three games on the second day of the Shorter Invitational. The competition was fierce at times, but the Golden Tigers proved they have the plays to seal the victories. The first match of the day was Lindsey Wilson College (KY) who was in the Receiving Votes Category of the Coaches Top 25 Pre-Season Poll earlier this year. While pitching was strong on both sides, the Golden Tigers were able to cinch a total of 6 hits and overcome the Blue Raiders with a score of 2-0. Anna Maness threw some heat from the mound and had an astonishing 14 strikeouts that held the Blue Raiders offense scoreless for the first time this season. Sophomore Tiffany Schandera was 1-3 with a single and 2 RBIs and junior Brooke Bryant was 2-3 with 2 bunts for a base hit.
The Golden Tigers second game against Tennessee Wesleyan College (TN) was a battle, but the team prevailed with a 4-3 victory. Newcomer freshman Jenny Shepherd had an impressive 5 strikeouts, and the team's concerted effort paid off with a total of 8 hits. Catcher Morgan Smith was unstoppable going 3-3 as she ripped a home run, a double, and a single, as well as, getting 3 RBIs in the process. Freshman Katie Bolin and sophomore Tiffany Schandera were each 1-3 with Bolin hitting a single with 1 RBI and Schandera cranking a double.
At the end of the day, Brenau demonstrated what a power-hitting force they are and finished their tournament play beating Georgetown College (KY) by an astounding 12-4 score. The bats were hot all around, but Morgan Smith once again nailed a home run going 1-2 with 2 RBIs. Tiffany Schandera had an amazing game going 4-4 with 3 singles, a double, and 4 RBIs, and freshman Kristina Reynolds had her day at the plate going 2-4 with a home run, a double, and 2 RBIs. Additionally, Anna Maness had another stellar performance from the mound pitching 4 strikeouts.
The Golden Tigers now have an undefeated record of 9-0 and hope to build on this streak of success when they begin conference play in Cleveland, GA against Truett-McConnell College on March 1st at 4:00 pm.
