Brenau Softball Breaks Top 5 in the Nation
Gainesville, GA - Yesterday, the #5 Brenau University Softball Team defeated Southern Wesleyan in both games, of their double header. The Golden Tigers overwhelmed the Warriors, the entire evening, with the final scores resulting in 12-1 and 9-0. These 2 victories, not only allowed Brenau to add 2 more wins onto their overall record, making them 24-2, but also permitted them to continue their winning streak in conference, 8-0. Unfortunately, for Southern Wesleyan last night's games brought them to a record of 2-24, and 2-10 in the SSAC.
Within the first game, of the conference match-up, the Golden Tigers seemed to be unwavering. By the end of the 1st inning, Brenau took advantage of what little time they had, to create a lead of 4-0. Another 4 runs were scored in the 2nd inning, by Brenau, however Southern Wesleyan answered back with 1 run. With a lead of 8-1, during the 3rd inning, Brenau earned their last 4 runs on the board. Clearly, with a score of 12-1, the Golden Tigers took advantage of their time at the plate.
Tiffany Schandera (Columbus, GA) led Brenau, going 3-3 at bat, with 2 homeruns, a single, and 3 RBIs. Furthermore, Jacqueline McWhorter (Columbus, GA) and Sally Duggan (Huntsville, AL) both went 1-3 at bat, earning a triple, and 1 RBI. Morgan Smith (Covington, GA) contributed from the plate, with a double, while Brooke Bryant (Royston, GA) delivered a single. Both freshmen, Kristina Reynolds (Bogart, GA) and Katie Bolin (Danielsville, GA) played big against the Warriors; Reynolds went 2-3 at bat with a single, double, and 1 RBI, and Bolin came in strong going 1-3 at the plate, hitting a homerun, and 1 RBI. Anna Maness (Seagrove, NC) played an effective role from the mound, by striking out 4 of the Southern Wesleyan Warriors. As for the veteran, Ellen Black (Toccoa Falls, GA), she dominated on the field; Black went 3-3, with a single double, homerun, and 4 RBIs.
In the second game, Brenau made a statement that they would not be hitting a mid-season slump anytime soon! During the 1st inning, Brenau shut out Southern Wesleyan 3-0, and showed no signs of backing off. They continued to lengthen their lead, when they made an additional run, in the 2nd. In the 3rd inning, fans watched as the Golden Tigers continued to dominate both the field and the scoreboard, while racking up 4 more runs. The final run was made in the 4th inning, bringing the score to 9-0. With these victories, the Golden Tigers are able to continue fighting for the prize position at the top of the Southern States Athletic Conference.
This particular series allowed Schandera to prove why she was selected as the Golden Tiger of the Week. She went 1-3 at bat, with a homerun, and 1 RBI. Schandera broke the school record, for 3 homeruns in a series! McWhorter went 2-4, with 2 singles, and 2 stolen bases. Both Black and Bolin made solid contacts at the plate; Black went 1-2, with a single, and Bolin went 2-2, with a single, and a double. Jana Bryant (Marietta, GA) went 3-3 at bat, with 3 singles. Reynolds came in big with a double, grandslam, and 5 RBIs, and Jenny Shepherd (Martinez, GA) earned a homerun and a RBI.
The #5 Golden Tigers will be back in action, for another conference double header, against Emmanuel College. The games are set to take place at Emmanuel, this Saturday (April 2nd) at 12 and 2pm.
