Brenau Pitches No Hitter against Brewton Parker
Mount Vernon, GA - The #9 Golden Tigers were on the road once again, making the long drive to Brewton-Park College. Both teams were relying heavily on the result of this series, due to the mere fact that their rankings could be upset, within the Southern States Athletic Conference. In the East Division of the conference, Brenau was in 2nd place, with Brewton-Parker and Lee tied for 3rd. The Golden Tigers executed their game plan wonderfully, as they were placed in a pressure filled environment. With 2 more victories under their belt, Brenau was now 17-5 in conference, and 33-7 overall. As for the Lady Barons, they dropped to a record of 14-8 in the SSAC, and 23-14 overall.
Both teams were on edge, when the first pitch was thrown; neither team managing to get on the board in the 1st and 2nd inning. When the game entered into the 3rd inning the tension was high; each team prepared for a play to occur at any moment, which would in turn, drastically change the tone of the game. However, it was not until the 4th inning when a run was made, by Brenau. The Golden Tigers racked up a total of 2 runs, in the 4th, holding the lead 2-0. When Brenau was at bat, in the 5th, they were determined to end the game right then, and they did just that. They earned 6 more runs, bringing the score to 8-0. The run rule was put into effect, allowing the Golden Tigers to defeat the Lady Barons on their home field, in the first game of the series.
For the Golden Tigers, Tiffany Schandera (Columbus, GA) made her presence known on the field, when she went 2-3 at bat, with a single and a double. Freshman, Jenny Shepherd (Martinez, GA), has clearly earned her spot on the roster; she earned a single and 2 RBIs for Brenau, while Kristina Reynolds (Bogart, GA) helped her team out when she earned a single. Katie Bolin (Danielsville, GA) went 2-3 at the plate, with 2 singles and a RBI, and Sally Duggan (Huntsville, AL) received a single and 1 RBI. As a team, the Golden Tigers earned 8 runs from the 7 hits that were made, while recording 3 errors. Anna Maness (Seagrove, NC) had a phenomenal game; she threw 3 strike outs, and pitched a no hitter!
As the 2nd game started, Brenau seemed as though they were still running off the momentum they had created, towards the end of the previous game. In the 1st inning, the Golden Tigers put 2 runs on the board, with the Lady Barons showing no reaction from the dugout. Brenau took the opportunity to build onto their lead, in the 2nd inning, when they pulled out another run, leading Brewton-Parker, 3-0. Both teams struggled to get on base in the 3rd, but the 4th inning proved to be different story. The Lady Barons woke up their fans, once they earned a run, but unfortunately, for them they were cast back into the Golden Tigers' shadow soon afterwards. Brenau pulled out 3 additional runs in the 4th, bringing the score to 6-1. The 5th inning did not provide the crowd with much action, but the Golden Tigers placed another run on the board, in the 6th. Entering into the 7th inning, with the score of 7-1, Brenau was focused on maintaining their lead, which meant they would not provide Brewton-Parker with any unearned runs. Neither team received a run in the final inning, keeping the score at 7-1. The Golden Tigers left the field with their heads high, as they walked back to their bus, preparing for their next game, against Columbia College.
During the 2nd game, Bolin delivered from the plate; she went 2-4, with a homerun, a single, and 2 RBIs. Shepherd was right up there with her, when she went 2-4 at bat, with a triple, double, and 2 RBIs. Moreover, Shepherd also performed beautifully from the mound, striking out 6 of the Lady Barons. Schandera and Duggan both contributed, by earning singles, while Reynolds left the field with a double and 2 RBIs. Lana Lazar (Sharpsburg, GA) went 1-3, with a single, and Jana Bryant (Marietta, GA) earned 3 singles. Morgan Smith (Covington, GA) was back in action, after sitting out due to an elbow injury; she played a solid game, going 2-3 at bat, with 2 singles and a RBI. Brenau put 6 runs on the board while making contact in 14 hits, and only recording 1 error. As for Brewton-Parker, they were only able to get 3 hits, which they only earned 1 run, while making 2 errors.
