Brenau Softball Team Wins Lauren Giddings Classic
DECATUR GA - Returning to action in the second day's play at the Lauren Giddings Classic, the Brenau University Softball team needed just one more win to secure the championship. After two victories the previous day, the Tigers began where they left off with a repeat victory over hosts Agnes Scott- posting a 7-0 shutout victory in the process.
The Golden Tigers had 10 hits in the game allowing Agnes Scott just 2 hits in return. Jenny Shepherd was the winning Brenau pitcher with a total of 9 strike outs on the day. At the plate, senior Morgan Smith led the way going 2 -3 with 2 RBI's and a homerun. Lana Lazar and Tiffany Schandera both picked up 1 RBI apiece. Kris Reynolds went 1-2 and Katie Bolin went 2-3 on the afternoon.
Brenau finished as champions and more impressively did so without giving up any runs during the entire two day tournament! Brenau is the first team to win the Lauren Giddings tournament and elected to donate their trophy to the Giddings family in Lauren's honor. Three of the Golden Tigers gained personal recognition in the tournament picking up several awards. Sally Duggan was named to the All-Tournament Team and took home the title of MVP for the tournament. Anna Maness also made the All Tournament team and took the award for Most Valuable Pitcher of the tournament and Taylor Kelley collected the award for All Tournament Team- Shortstop.
This weekend's wins bring their overall record to 10-1 overall. The Golden Tigers return to action this weekend as they head to the highly acclaimed Gulf Coast Invitational Tournament to be held in Gulf Shores, AL. The first game for Brenau will feature a match-up against Morningside College of Iowa. The game is set for Friday, March 9th at 11AM.
