March 21, 2012
ROME, GA - Brenau University Softball team split their double header last night against Shorter University. The Golden Tigers came into the Southern States Athletic Conference game with a record of 17-4 and 4-0 in the SSAC. Brenau- ranked 10th in the NAIA National Rankings this week- started the evening in Rome strong taking the first game 5-1, but were unfortunate in the second game to lose by a single run in the eighth inning.
In the first game Brenau were the first to score when senior Morgan Smith (1-2) hit a home run in the second. However, the Lady Hawks quickly replied in the third when they recorded a single RBI. With the score tied at 1-1 Brenau continued to press Shorter's defense and were
rewarded in the fifth inning when Taylor Kelley (1-4, 2RBI) lined to the right to score 2 runs. In the sixth, Brenau put the game out of reach for the Lady Hawks when Tiffany Schandera (1-3, 1RBI) hit a line shot to the center (a double) allowing Katie Bolin to score from second and then moments later Jenny Shepherd (2-3, 1RBI) also hit a double to allow Schandera to score taking the total to 5-1. Lana Lazar went 1 for 2 with 2 sacrifice bunts and Jaqueline McWhorter went 1 for 1. Brenau had a total 8 hits compared to Shorter's 4. At the mound junior, Anna Maness was dominant throughout with a complete-game; she had a four-hitter with six strikeouts.
The second game was a much tighter affair; the game was forced into eight innings as no team could make their way onto the scoreboard. Eventually, in the bottom of the eighth Shorter broke through the Tiger's defense when Amanda Dailey hit a triple to right center allowing Jackie Castaneda to take the winning run. Brenau had 3 hits to Shorter's 7 in the second game. Jenny Shepherd pitched the game for the Golden Tigers recording 4 strike outs. Shepard was also a threat at the plate going 1 for 3. Juniors, Tiffany Schandera and Jana Bryant also went 1 for 3.
