Tigers Drop 1st Game of SSAC Tournament

Columbus, GA - The Brenau Golden Tigers softball team was narrowly defeated last night by Auburn-Montgomery (AUM) in the first round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament. In a hard-fought contest that was decided in the 9th inning, AUM beat the Golden Tigers 5-4 in the South Commons Softball Complex.
AUM was the first to score in the 2nd inning and then pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 4th inning. However, two innings later, senior Ellen Black crushed a two-run homer over the centerfield fence to tie up the the game 2-2. Once again, though, AUM was quick to respond with a single run in the bottom of the 6th. At the top of the 7th, Brenau pushed across a pair of runs on another single by Ellen Black to take the lead for the first time in the game. The Warhawks rallied for the tying run in the bottom of the 7th when AUM's Richards singled home Reynolds making the score 4-4. AUM eventually took the 5th and final run in the 9th inning.
Anna Maness began the pitching for Brenau accumulating a total of 4 strikeouts. She was replaced by Jenny Shepherd who finished out the game and had 2 strikeouts. The Golden Tigers had a total of 6 hits to AUM's 12. Ellen Black was Brenau's hitting star going 2 for 4 with 4 RBIs and a homerun. Other hits in the game went to Brooke Bryant (1 for 3), Kris Reynolds (1 for 4), Taylor Kelly (1 for 4), and Jana Bryant (1 for 4).
The Golden Tigers will move on to face Faulkner University at 10:00 am today.
