Tigers Softball Wins Two Against Cavaliers
The Brenau Golden Tigers softball team resumed their schedule after a short break, facing Montreat College (NC) in a non-conference doubleheader.
In game 1, the Golden Tigers capitalized early on two Montreat errors, jumping out to a 3-0 first inning lead. From the leadoff spot, sophomore Katie Bolin (Danielsville, Ga.) reached base on a Montreat throwing error, while Tiffany Schandera (Columbus, Ga.) singled to center to bring home the first of three early runs. Taylor Kelly (Toccoa, Ga.) and Sally Duggan (Huntsville, Al.) followed up with RBI singles to close out the inning.
The fourth inning also proved costly for the Cavaliers. Junior Katie Bolin's sac fly allowed Duggan to score, while a bases loaded walk from Lydia Gerrin (Mount Airy, Ga.) and another Schandera single gave the Golden Tigers a 6-1 lead. RBIs from Duggan, Caitlyn Glenn (Watkinsville, Ga. ) , Taylor Kelly and Cheyenne Marsh (Richmond Hill, Ga.) allowed Brenau to cruise to a 10-1 win.
The Golden Tigers were led by senior Tiffany Schandera, who went 2-3 with two RBIs and junior Sally Duggan, who went 2-2 with 2 RBIs.
Anna Maness (Seagrove, NC) pitched four strong innings to record her second win of the season. The senior allowed one run on four hits, while striking out 7.
In the second game, Montreat jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, scoring on a two-run home run in the first inning. However, the Golden Tigers responded with a Taylor Kelly RBI to cut the deficit in half.
In the third inning, the Brenau offense continued to roll, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead. Liz Schneider (Smyrna, Ga.), Katie Bolin and Sally Duggan had RBIs to increase the Brenau lead, while Taylor Causey (Covington, Ga.) and Anna Maness combined for seven strong innings of pitching to shut down the Cavalier offense.
Schneider went 3-3 with and RBI to lead the Golden Tigers' offense, while Taylor Kelly went 2-3 with an RBI.
Causey and Maness combined to pitch seven innings, giving up two runs and scattering five hits. Maness, pitching four innings, earned her fourth win of the season.
The victory increased the Golden Tigers' record to 5-2.
When asked about the two wins, Coach Devon Thomas said that "We are still trying to find the right chemistry. We did play two error free games and we got strong pitching, so I think we can build on that."
The Golden Tigers will next face Penn State-Behrend on Saturday in the 2nd annual Laura Giddings Classic.
