Brenau Softball Wins Two at Gulf Shores
In the first game of the Gulf Shores Invitational, the Brenau Golden Tigers softball team defeated the Lyon College, Arkansas, Scots 8-0 in five innings.
Jenny Shepherd (Martinez, Ga.) threw a five inning, no-hitter to secure the win for the Golden Tigers. The junior hurler struck out eight and captured her first win of the season.
Sophomore Lydia Gerrin (Mt. Airy, Ga.) went 3-3 with two RBIs, while senior Taylor Kelly (Toccoa, Ga.) went 2-3. The Golden Tigers pounded 13 hits and capitalized on five Lyon College errors. The victory gave Brenau its tenth win of the season.
In the second game, the Golden Tigers softball team defeated Cumberland University, Tennessee, 3-1. Brenau struck first with leadoff hitter Tiffany Schandera (Columbus, Ga.) scoring on Liz Schneider's (Smyrna, Ga.) sacrifice RBI. The Golden Tigers extended their lead in the 2nd inning, as Lydia Gerrin's bunt RBI and Schandera's sacrifice RBI gave Brenau a 3-0 lead.
After a Cumberland run in the third inning cut the deficit to 3-1, pitcher Anna Maness (Seagrove, NC.) shut down the Bulldogs' offense. The senior gave up seven hits, yielding one run with 3 strikeouts. The win gave Maness her seventh win of the season and secured the eleventh win for the Golden Tigers.
In the final game of the first day of the Invitational, the Golden Tigers lost 2-0 to conference foe Spring Hill College. The bats failed the Golden Tigers as only three players reached base. Katie Bolin (Danielsville, Ga.) and Caitlyn Glenn (Watkinsville, Ga.) each went 1-3. Jenny Shepard took the loss, giving up two runs in 2 2/3 innings. The loss drops Brenau's record to 11-3 on the season.
Coach Devon Thomas said, "We had a good first day. We hit the ball well in game 1 and got good pitching and defense in game 2. However in game 3, we faced a very talented pitcher who kept us off balance and didn't allow us to string hits together to produce any runs".
The second day of the Gulf Shores Invitational picks up on Saturday as Brenau faces Freed-Hardman University, Tennessee at 9 am and LSU-Alexandria at 11 am.
