Five Softball Players Receive SSAC Accolades
Five Brenau softball players were honored by the Southern States Athletic Conference for their performances during the 2014 season.
Senior Jenny Shepherd was named Division Player of the Year for her standout play as both a pitcher and a position player. Shepherd was also named to the All-Conference Team and as a Gold Glove for her defensive play as a pitcher.
Offensively, the senior was second in home runs (7) and tied for second in RBIs (37) for the Golden Tigers, while leading the team in wins (22), era (1.80) and strikeouts (216). Shepherd was ranked 7th nationally in wins and 11th in strikeouts.
Liz Schneider- also a multiple award winner- was named to the All-Conference team and as a Gold Glove for her play at first base. Schneider was second in batting average (.426), tied for second in RBIs (37) and fourth in slugging percentage (.555).
Junior Katie Cole was also an All-Conference selection for her outstanding play. The Tupelo, Mississippi native was third in batting average (.403), first in home runs (9), second in slugging (.713) and first in RBIs (43).
Two freshmen- Victoria Fontana and Allison Gunn-were honored in their inaugural seasons.
Victoria Fontana was selected for both the All-Division and All-Freshman teams. Fontana was fifth in batting average (.346) for the Golden Tigers.
Allison Gunn was also named an All-Freshman selection. Gunn hit .436 and was second in stolen bases with 12.
