Softball Wraps Up Gulf Shores Invitational
On the final two days of the Gulf Shores Invitational in Gulf Shores, Alabama, the #20 Brenau softball team defeated Purdue University-Calumet (Ind.) 7-1, but fell to #3 Reinhardt (Ga.) University 9-4 and Spring Hill (Ala.) College 5-0.
Against Purdue University-Calumet, the Peregrines scored in the top of the second to take an early lead. The Brenau offense responded in the bottom of the inning as Landon Farrow (JR/Martin, Ga.) singled to drive in Sarah Peery (FR/Auburn, Ga.) and Savannah Moore (FR/Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) to give the Golden Tigers a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Tigers went on the offensive again in the fourth inning when a Peregrine error allowed pinch runner Allison Gunn (SO/Toccoa, Ga.) to score their third run. Taylor Causey (JR/Covington, Ga.) followed up with a two-run double to increase the score to 5-1. Brenau added two more runs in the fifth when Cheyenne Marsh (JR/Richmond Hill, Ga.) added a two-run double of her own to make the score 7-1.
Madison Gossett (FR/Trenton, Ga.) pitched two innings, allowing one run with two strikeouts to take the win. Jenny Willis (SR/Auburn, Ga.) pitched five shutout innings in relief to help close out the game.
Against Reinhardt, Moore continued to swing a hot bat as the freshman drove in all four Brenau runs. However, the defense couldn't hold as the Golden Tigers committed four errors, which led to four unearned runs against the Eagles.
Gossett took the loss as the freshman pitched 2 2/3 innings, allowing no earned runs and six walks. Willis pitched 4 1/3 innings in relief while allowing five earned runs.
In the top-eight Gold Bracket, the Brenau bats went cold against NCAA Division II Spring Hill (Ala.) College.
The Golden Tigers could only generate three hits against former SSAC Pitcher of the Year Caroline Sagrera and were unable to get past an early 4-0 deficit.
Mackenzie Oliver (SO/Martin, Ga.), Marsh and Farrow each added a hit for Brenau.
Gossett (7-3) took her third loss of the season as the freshman pitched only one inning, allowing one run and two walks.
Brenau (13-3, 4-0 SSAC) next hosts Faulkner (Ala.) University on Friday in a 3 pm doubleheader at Lanier Point Park in Gainesville.
