#21 Softball Sweeps Emmanuel
The #21 Brenau softball team returned to winning ways with a sweep of non-conference opponent Emmanuel (Ga.) College on Wednesday in Franklin Springs, Ga.
The Golden Tigers used a strong outing from Madison Gossett (FR/Trenton, Ga.) for a 5-2 win. The freshman pitched seven innings, allowing only two runs with two strikeouts to secure her eighth win of the season.
Brenau got on the scoreboard in the top of the first when Kelsey Payne (FR/Chattanooga, Tenn.) scored from third on a passed ball. Payne then hit an RBI single in the second inning to score Sarah Peery (FR/Auburn, Ga.). Elizabeth Schneider (JR/Smyrna, Ga.) added to the inning by driving in two runs to increase the lead to 4-1. The Golden Tigers added one insurance run in the top of the fourth for the win.
Cheyenne Marsh (JR/Richmond Hill, Ga.) and Schneider each went 2-4, while Mackenzie Oliver (SO/Martin, Ga.) went 2-2 with two stolen bases. Oliver currently leads the SSAC with 19 stolen bases.
In game two, Jenny Willis (SR/Auburn, Ga.) continued the strong pitching for the Golden Tigers as the senior threw six innings, allowing only two runs with three strikeouts to capture her fifth win. Taylor Causey (JR/Covington, Ga.) pitched one inning in relief for the save.
The Brenau offense came alive in the top of the second as pinch runner Lauren Sanders (FR/Maysville, Ga.) scored on a passed ball for the first run of the inning. Marsh then scored on a Victoria Fontana (SO/Jackson, GA) infield single, while Schneider doubled home two more runs to give the Golden Tigers an early 4-0 lead. Schneider then continued to swing a hot bat as the junior blasted a triple to drive home Oliver, while Marsh added an RBI single to ensure the 6-2 win.
Marsh and Schneider combined for four hits and four RBIs at the plate in game two, while Katie Cole and Savannah Moore (FR/Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) each added a hit.
Brenau (16-6, 4-2 SSAC) next hosts Tennessee Temple University on Tuesday for a non-conference 3 pm doubleheader.
