Softball Falls to Mobile; Splits With William Carey
The Brenau softball team dropped two games to #23 University of Mobile (Ala.), but split with #9 William Carey (Miss.) University this past weekend in Gainesville.
In game one against Mobile, the Golden Tigers roared out to a 7-1 lead behind home runs from Kelsey Payne (FR/Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Savannah Moore (FR/Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) and a strong pitching performance from Taylor Causey (JR/Covington, Ga.). However, multiple errors in the top of the sixth inning allowed the Rams to score four runs to cut the Brenau lead to 7-5. The visitors then added two more runs in the top of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
With the game tied 7-7, Mobile added two in the top of the 10th inning for a 9-7 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Payne drove in Sarah Peery (FR/Auburn, Ga.) to make the score 9-8, but the Golden Tigers offense was unable to overcome the deficit.
Causey pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing only two hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts.
In game two, the Rams scored 11 runs in the first three innings to take a commanding lead. Brenau chipped away behind RBIs from Payne, Elizabeth Schneider (JR/Smyrna, Ga.) and Katie Cole (SR/Tupelo, Miss.), but the game was stopped after the fifth inning due to run rule.
Against William Carey, the Golden Tigers again found themselves behind early as the Crusaders scored four runs in the first inning.
In the third inning, Brenau rallied as Madison Lacy (FR/Trenton, Ga.) drilled a two-run homer to make the score 4-3. However an error-filled fifth inning allowed the Crusaders to slip away with the 8-3 win.
Lacy went 1-3 with two RBIs, while Payne went 2-3.
Madison Gossett (FR/Trenton, Ga.) pitched one inning, allowing two earned runs to take the loss. Jenny Willis (SR/Auburn, Ga.) pitched six innings of relief, allowing two earned runs and three strikeouts.
In the final game of the weekend, the Brenau offense exploded for eight runs in the first inning to take an 8-4 win.
Payne went 2-3 with two RBIs, while Peery and Victoria Fontana (SO/Jackson, GA) added two RBIs each. Mason Garland (FR/Hoschton, Ga.) also added an RBI to the win.
Causey picked up her fourth win of year in 6 2/3 innings of work. The junior allowed four runs on ten hits, while striking out seven. Gossett pitched the last out of the game to pick up the save.
Brenau (19-9, 5-5 SSAC) next plays in a 1 pm Wednesday doubleheader against non-conference opponent Truett-McConnell (Ga.) College in Cleveland, Ga.
