Softball Splits With Martin Methodist and Bethel
The Brenau softball team split a pair of Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheaders with Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College and Bethel (Tenn.) University in Gainesville over the weekend.
In the opener against Martin Methodist, both teams scored in the first inning for a 1-1 tie. After Martin Methodist scored to open the second inning, the Golden Tigers answered in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 2-2. However the Redhawks notched runs in the top of the sixth and seventh to pull away with a 4-2 victory.
Gracie Dorr pitched a strong game in the loss as the freshman allowed only two earned runs over seven innings.
In game two, Brenau outhit the visitors 12-2 to roll to a 6-0 win. The Golden Tigers scored a run in the third, fourth and fifth innings as well as three in the sixth to earn the shutout.
Savannah Moore went 2-3 with a home run and three RBIs, while Mason Garland went 3-3 and one RBI.
Jessica Rathje had a dominating game on the mound to earn her eighth game of the year. The sophomore allowed only two hits over seven innings to help the Golden Tigers earn the split.
On Saturday, Brenau struggled to find their rhythm at the plate with a 1-0 loss in the opening game against Bethel.
The Golden Tigers scattered a mere four hits and wasted a strong outing on the mound by Dorr. The Canton, Ga. native pitched another complete game, allowing only one run to the visiting Wildcats.
In the second game, Rathje shut down the visitors, while Kelsey Payne added three hits to secure a 3-2 win.
Rathje pitched her second complete game of the weekend, allowing only two runs and seven hits.
Elizabeth Schneider added two hits and an RBI, while Cheyenne Marsh added another hit in the win.
Brenau (15-14 overall, 2-4 SSAC) next travels to Talledega (Ala.) College in Talledega, Alabama on Thursday for a doubleheader.
