#23 Softball Splits With Bryan
The #23 ranked Brenau softball team split with Bryan (Tenn.) University in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday.
In game one, the Golden Tigers combined another strong outing from pitcher Jessica Rathje with a five- run second inning to rout the visiting Lions, 7-1.
Rathje, the reigning Southern States Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week, held the Bryan offense to one run on three hits over seven innings to win her 16th game of the season.
The Golden Tigers pounded out 11 hits to win their 23rd game of the season. Kelsey Payne led the charge with three hits and an RBI, while Elizabeth Schneider went 2-4 with two RBIs. Savannah Moore added two hits and two RBIs, while Allison Gunn drove in two RBIs.
In game two, the Lions responded with an opening 4-2 lead in the first inning, and then scored five in the top of the seventh to pull away 11-3.
Schneider added a home run and two RBIs to her solid day at the plate, while Cheyenne Marsh and Landon Farrow each notched a hit.
Gracie Dorr struggled to get out of the first inning and gave up four first inning runs to the visiting Lions, while Taylor Causey pitched 5 2/3 innings in relief, allowing ten hits and five earned runs in the loss.
Brenau (23-16 overall, 7-5 SSAC) gets back to conference play against #6 William Carey (Miss.) University on Friday. Game one will begin at 3:00 pm eastern at Lanier Point Park in Gainesville.
