Pitching Propels Softball at Grizzly Classic
On day one of the Grizzly Softball Classic hosted by Georgia Gwinnett College, the Brenau softball team used two outstanding pitching performances to defeat West Virginia Tech and host Georgia Gwinnett on Saturday in Lawrenceville.
Against West Virginia Tech, Jessica Rathje pitched seven shutout innings to help the Golden Tigers win 6-2.
The sophomore pitcher allowed only three hits while striking out eight in the opening game of the classic.
The Brenau offense slugged out six runs in the first inning to give Rathje a comfortable lead. Shelton Kendrix, Autumn Conaway and Mackenzie Oliver Mullis each had two hits in the game.
In the second game against #13 Georgia Gwinnett, pitcher Eli Daniel struck out 13 batters to shut out the host Grizzlies 4-0.
Daniel dazzled on the mound as the freshman pitched a complete seven innings while allowing only one hit to capture her sixth win of the season.
Conaway and Kendrix both added two hits, while Courtney Kenney drove in two runs in the victory.
Brenau (9-2) continues play at the Grizzly Classic on Sunday as the team plays West Virginia Tech at 10 am and Montreat (NC) College at 12:30 pm.
