Softball Rolls on Day Two of Grizzly Classic
On day two of the Grizzly Softball Classic, the Brenau softball team continued to roll through the competition with a 4-0 shutout of West Virginia Tech and a 4-2 win against Montreat (NC) College on Sunday in Lawrenceville.
After defeating West Virginia Tech on Saturday, the Golden Tigers again topped the Golden Bears as freshman Eli Daniel produced another outstanding outing. The Locust Grove, Ga. native pitched a complete game, allowing only one hit and no runs with 13 strikeouts to win her seventh game of the season.
Offensively, Brenau struck in the second inning as Courtney Kenney and Shelton Kendrix hit back to back singles to start the inning. The Golden Bears' Chelsey Adkins then misplayed a Tabitha Morrison fly ball to allow both runners to score to give the Golden Tigers a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, Kendrix doubled to deep left-center to score Autumn Conaway, and then Kenney scored on a Mason Garland sacrifice to make the score 4-0.
Garland, Kendrix and Kenney each contributed two hits to the win, while Mackenzie Oliver Mullis and Lexi Cash each had one hit.
In the finale of the weekend, the Golden Tigers found themselves in an early 2-0 hole as Montreat capitalized on three first inning hits and a wild pitch from starter Jessica Rathje.
However, Brenau answered with a run in the second as Cash singled home Kendrix to make the score 2-1.
Brenau added two runs in the fourth behind RBIs from Cash and Sarah Peery, and one run in the sixth from a Kelsey Payne RBI to win their fourth game of the weekend.
Rathje captured her fourth win of the season, allowing only the two runs over four innings, while Daniel earned her first save after pitching three innings in relief.
Brenau (11-2 overall) next hosts Truett McConnell (Ga.) College on Thursday in Gainesville. The doubleheader will begin at 4 pm eastern.
