Softball Sweeps Montreat in Non-Conference Play
The Brenau softball team swept Montreat (NC) College 3-0 and 10-3 in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday in Gainesville.
In the opening game, freshman pitcher Kathleen Daniel struck out 14 batters across seven innings to help lead the Golden Tigers to a 3-0 win.
Daniel, who leads the NAIA in both strikeouts and earned run average, continued her torrid run through the early season schedule with a four-hit shutout.
At the plate, Kelsey Payne went 2-4, while Shelton Kendrix added a hit and an RBI. Lexi Cash also drove in a run as the Golden Tigers scored one run in each of the second, fourth and sixth innings.
In the second game of the day, the Golden Tigers pounded out eight hits and capitalized on four Montreat errors to roll to a 10-3 win.
Brenau started the scoring first, plating one run in the bottom of the second. However, the visiting Cavaliers put up three in the top of the third for a 3-1 lead. However, the Brenau offense responded with nine runs over the next three innings for their fourteenth win of the year.
Mason Garland had a 2-4 day at the plate with four RBIs, while Savannah Moore added one hit and three RBIs to the victory. Lexi Cash and Tabitha Morrison each added an RBI in the win.
Autumn Conaway added a hit and two stolen bases and MacKenzie Oliver-Mullis, Lauren Sanders and Cash also stole bases in the game.
Starter Jessica Rathje went three innings, allowing three runs on four hits with three strikeouts, while Daniel earned the win in relief with four shutout innings.
Brenau (14-3 overall) next hosts Agnes Scott (Ga.) College on Sunday for a 1 pm doubleheader.
