#8 Softball Takes Two From Blue Mountain
The #8 ranked Brenau softball team closed out their road trip with two wins over Blue Mountain (Miss.) College to remain undefeated in Southern States Conference play.
In the opening game, the Golden Tigers got home runs from Savannah Moore and Tabitha Morrison, plus another strong pitching performance from Kathleen Daniel, to cruise to a 5-2 victory.
Moore laced a two-run homer in the top of the third inning to give the Golden Tigers a 3-1 lead, while Morrison added a solo shot- her first of the year-in the top of the fourth inning as an insurance run.
Daniel continued her strong freshman campaign with a complete game performance against the Toppers. The Locust Grove, Ga. native allowed two earned runs while striking out 14 with no walks to take game one.
In the second game, Blue Mountain jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning behind an Autumn Bonner homer, but the Golden Tigers answered with two runs in the top of the third as Kelsey Payne and Autumn Conaway drove in runs to even the game at 2-2.
The score stayed tied until the top of eighth when the Golden Tigers found their spark. With one out, Mackenzie Oliver Mullis singled, and then stole second. Freshman Autumn Conaway then hit a single to left to score Mullis, and advanced to second on the throw home. Moore drove a line-drive double to left-center to score Conaway and close out the game 4-2.
Daniel (26-2) pitched all eight innings, allowing only two runs, while striking out 12 for the win.
Annabelle Smith took the loss for Blue Mountain, which dropped to 12-15 overall (4-9 SSAC) on the year.
Brenau (33-5 overall, 13-0 SSAC) next takes on #21 University of Mobile (23-8 overall, 10-2 SSAC) in a Friday doubleheader at Ernest Ledford Grindle Athletics Park at 2 pm eastern.
