Softball Sweeps Brewton Parker and Middle Georgia
The Brenau softball team used dominant pitching to sweep games over Brewton Parker (Ga.) College and Middle Georgia State University to remain undefeated in Southern States Athletic Conference play this past weekend.
In game one against Brewton Parker, starters Kathleen Daniel and Jessica Rathje combined for a no-hitter with 14 strikeouts and no walks to shut out the host Barons 7-0. Tabitha Morrison drove in two runs, while Lexi Cash, Autumn Conaway and Kelsey Payne each had an RBI to account for the runs.
In game two against Brewton Parker, Rathje continued to pitch well and Conaway added a home run to roll to a 14-0 victory in five innings.
Rathje threw five shutout innings, allowing only four hits with six strikeouts and no walks to capture her eighth win of the year.
Conaway had a perfect 3-3 day at the plate with a homerun and three RBIs, while Sarah Peery went 2-2 with two RBIs. Cash added two RBIs and Mackenzie Oliver Mullis added an RBI and three stolen bases.
Against Middle Georgia, the strong pitching continued as Daniel pitched 14 shutout innings to sweep the Knights.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Golden Tigers scored three runs in the fourth inning and two more in the seventh to run away with a 5-0 win.
Mason Garland went 1-3 with three RBIs, while Mullis added two hits and three steals in the win.
In the final game of the weekend, Peery and Kelsey Payne led the offensive charge with two RBIs each, while Conaway and Morrison also each added an RBI as Brenau won 7-0.
Daniel threw 14 innings over both games, allowing no runs with 25 strikeouts and no walks to improve her record to 35-2 on the year.
Brenau (43-5 overall, 22-0 SSAC) next hosts Faulkner (Ala.) University for a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader on Tuesday in Gainesville at 5pm. Before the first game, the Golden Tigers will celebrate the inaugural season at Ernest Ledford Grindle Athletics Park at Pacolet Milliken Field at 4:30 pm.
