Softball Opens With Sweep of Agnes Scott
Gainesville, Georgia- The Brenau softball team opened the 2020 season with a pair of wins over Agnes Scott (Ga.) College in non-conference play on Saturday.
In the opening game, the visiting Scotties took an early 4-2 lead, however, the Golden Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore Maygan Loparo doubled to center to start the rally. Senior Autumn Conaway followed with a double to score pinch runner sophomore Claire Fendig, and then Conaway scored on an Agnes Scott error to even the game 4-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, senior Shelton Kendrix and junior Karly Smith each singled to start the inning, then junior Faith Grooms doubled to deep left field to score both runners and clinch the victory 6-4.
Grooms went 2-3 with three RBIs and a stolen base and Conaway and junior Brooke Wakenigg each added an RBI. Freshman Morgan Tyler chipped in three stolen bases.
Junior Cameron Dillard pitched seven innings in relief of junior starter Caroline Mitchell. The junior allowed only one run and struck out eight to capture the win.
In the second game, the Golden Tigers slugged out eleven hits to cruise to a 9-1 win in five innings.
The hit parade started in the first inning as Tyler led off the game with a single, then took second on stolen base. Grooms then doubled to center to score Tyler and then advanced to third on a stolen base. After a Loparo single, sophomore Steffanie Redmon doubled to deep right to score both runners to give the Golden Tigers a 3-0 lead.
After the Golden Tigers loaded the bases to start the bottom of the third inning, sophomore Erin Teaney doubled to score Conaway and Redmon to increase the lead to 5-0. Senior Tabitha Morrison added another run on a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Alyssa Maisonet to help give her team a commanding 6-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Tigers pounded out three more runs to roll to victory.
Grooms again posted two RBIs and a stolen base, while Tyler added two hits and a pair of steals. Redmon and Teaney added two RBIs each and Maisonett contributed two hits and an RBI.
Chloe Fambrough allowed only the lone run through four innings to earn her first win of the season.
Brenau (2-0 overall) next competes at the prestigious NAIA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Georgia. The squad will play a doubleheader on February 28th starting with Thomas More (Ky.) College at 12 pm, followed by the College of Coastal Georgia at 4 pm.
