Softball Edges Point 3-1 in AAC Tournament
Kingsport, Tennessee- The Brenau softball team continued its trek through the 2021 Appalachian Athletic Conference softball championships with a 3-1 win over Point (Ga.) University on Wednesday.
In the first inning, the Golden Tigers struck quickly as freshman Abigail Brown ripped a double off Point starter Amber Parker that scored senior Faith Grooms for an early 1-0 lead.
Grooms continued the scoring as the senior blasted a solo shot off Parker in the second inning to increase the Brenau lead to 2-0.
The Golden Tigers added a third run in the top of the fourth as senior Karly Smith singled home junior Kasey Blair for a 3-0 advantage.
The Skyhawks threatened in the bottom of the fifth as Ariyon Hightower scored on a Brooke Wakenigg error, but Brenau starter Cameron Dillard induced a pop up for the third out of the inning to stifle the Point rally.
Dillard scattered five hits across seven innings to win her third game of the tournament. The Lawrenceville, Ga. senior has been a stalwart on the mound, throwing all 21 innings in the championships, while allowing only four total runs.
Brenau (21-14 overall) next faces the winner of the Truett McConnell/Reinhardt game on Thursday at 3 pm.
