Cleveland, Georgia- The Brenau softball team split a pair of Appalachian Athletic Conference games against Truett McConnell (Ga) University on Tuesday.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, the Golden Tigers started quickly as Ava Moon hit a sacrifice fly in the 1st inning to score Dayton Power and then Whitney Hulsey singled to right field to score Emma Folds for an early 2-0 lead. Brenau added a run in the top of the third inning as Peyton Hawkins singled to right field to score Power to add to the advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth, the host Bears (19-8 overall, 8-2 AAC) answered by scoring two runs off Brenau starting pitcher Riley Walker to cut the score to 3-2. However, the Golden Tigers again answered as Power tripled to right-center field to start a three-run rally in the top of the fifth inning to regain control by a 7-2 score.
Truett McConnell added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Brenau answered with an insurance run in the top of the 7th to take an 8-3 win.
Moon led all hitters with three RBIs, while Hulsey went 3-4 with two RBIs. Walker battled the Bears through seven innings, allowing only three runs to earn the victory.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Truett responded by scoring two first innings runs off Brenau starter Emily Hall for an early 2-0 advantage. The Golden Tigers responded with one run in the top of the third to cut the Bears lead to 2-1, however, Truett posted two runs in the bottom of the third to increase the lead to 4-1.
The back and forth battle continued into the top of the fourth inning as Power hit a sacrifice fly to score Cayden Warren to make the score 4-2, then Folds doubled off Truett starter Elizabeth Bennett to score Riley Smith to cut the deficit to only one run. In the bottom of the inning, the Bears' Cassie Boatright hit a three-run homer to help Truett regain control of the game 7-3.
Brenau answered with one run in the top of the seventh inning, but were unable to complete the rally, falling by a 7-4 score.
Brenau (17-9 overall, 8-2 AAC) hosts Montreat (NC) College (11-13 overall, 3-7 AAC) in a conference doubleheader starting at 4 pm at Ernest Ledford Grindle Athletics Park.
