Pikeville (KY)
The Brenau softball team won three games on a critical Appalachian Athletic Conference road trip as the squad swept Union (Ky.) 6-5 and 4-3, then split with Pikeville (Ky.) by losing the opener 3-2, but rebounding with a 6-2 victory on Saturday.
In the opening game versus Union, the teams battled to a 5-5 tie until the top of the sixth inning when senior Riley Smith hit a sacrifice fly to score sophomore Elizabeth Bowen to take a 6-5 lead.
Pitchers Natalie Shubert and Emily Hall combined for two shutout innings to close the door on host Bulldogs and secure the victory.
The Golden Tigers used the same resilience in the second game of the doubleheader to come from behind and complete the sweep. After Union took a 3-0 lead, Brenau answered in the top of the 7th inning as junior Dayton Power started the rally with a solo home run to cut the deficit to 3-1. The squad used the momentum to take the lead as junior Ava Moon and sophomore Emma Folds scored on an error by Union to even the score to 3-3. Senior Whitney Hulsey then singled to right field to score junior Breanne Brookshire to finish the comeback and ultimately take the win.
Starter Emily Hall pitched all seven innings to earn the win.
Against Pikeville, the squad faltered in the opening game with a 3-2 loss, however, rallied in the second game to win 6-2 and take the split. Power hit a homer and drove in two runs, while Hulsey added two hits and two RBIs.
Hall threw another complete game to capture her second win of the trip.
Brenau (25-13 overall, 16-6 AAC) returns home on Tuesday to face Reinhardt (Ga.) (19-5 overall, 15-3 AAC) for a critical AAC doubleheader starting at 4 pm eastern.
