November 29, 2009
Athens, TN- Senior Captain Meg Henson (Gainesville) grabbed an offensive rebound and banked it in at the buzzer to lift Brenau (3-1) to a 70-69 win over Tennessee Wesleyan (5-3) tonight. The basket by Henson represented the only time the Tigers led in the second half and gives them their first win in Athens in four tries. Henson shared high point honors with Senior Sarah Ledford and Freshman Nikki Reed with 14 points each. The Bulldogs opened up a 26-10 advantage early in the game, but the Tigers fought back to trail 33-30 at the half. Poor shooting plagued Brenau all night as they only managed .359 from the field and .240 from beyond the arc (6-25), but they forced 20 turnovers with their pressure defense and outrebounded TWC 39-33, including 14 offensive rebounds. Ledford had her best game of the season in her first start adding six rebounds to her scoring effort and Reed led Brenau in rebounding with seven. "This has always been a tough place for us to play and it is nice to finally get a win here over a solid Tennessee Wesleyan team. We overcame some poor shooting with some great hustle plays that made the difference," said Coach Gary Bays. The Tigers will return to the Brenau gym on Tuesday to host NCAA II Georgia Southwestern at 6 pm.
