Tigers Win Second Straight at Morris Classic
November 14, 2010
Sumter, SC - Nikki Reed (Atlanta) came off the bench to score 16 points and grab seven rebounds to lead the Brenau basketball team to a 74-62 win over the host Morris Hornets on Saturday. The Tigers thus became the only team to win both games at the season-opening tournament. Reed got plenty of support from her friends with Freshman Tala Black (Marietta) scoring 15 points to earn team MVP for the tournament.
Anastasia Minaeva and Tatiana Khudiakova (Moscow, Russia) also scored in double digits for the second night with 13 and 10 points respectively. Brenau outrebounded the Hornets 49-29 with Freshman Raveen Crawford (Toccoa) leading the way with eight. Khudiakova grabbed six boards and Sophomore Gabby Harvey pulled down five. All fourteen players saw action in this one, with nine of them hitting the scoring column.
The Tigers started quickly, building an early 20 point bulge midway through the first half, but Morris recovered and closed the gap to 44-36 at the half. Brenau shot .464 from the field for the game, including a blistering 8-12 from the arc. Morris continued to cut into the deficit after halftime, closing to a four point margin before the Tigers pullled away to secure the win.
"This was a good start for us and we showed signs of things to come with our young bunch," said Coach Gary Bays. "We are still a work in progress, but you can see that the pieces are in place for some outstanding play as we learn how to play with each other."
Brenau will hit the road again on Tuesday when they travel to Waleska to take on former SSAC foe Reinhardt.
