Tigers Fall to Lyon at Belhaven Classic
January 1, 2011
Jackson, MS - The Lyon Scots (8-4), a team that received votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll, dominated the boards today 49-27 to come away with a 66-52 victory over the Brenau Golden Tigers (8-2) at the Belhaven Classic. In addition to the rebound differential, the Tigers hurt themselves with a poor shooting day, hitting only 2-19 from behind the arc and 19-61 overall from the field.
Sophomore captain Gabby Harvey (Lilburn) was the only player in double figures for Brenau, finishing with 12 on 5-10 shooting. She also led the team with six steals. Freshman point guard Brittney Wiley finished with nine points, but could only connect one 1-8 from long distance. Wiley also came up with five steals as the Tigers forced the Scots into 26 turnovers with their pressure. Brenau had a season low 14 turnovers, which has been a problem area.
The game was close throughout the first half, with five lead changes, and was tied six times. Lyon went on a run right before the half to take a 34-25 advantage into the locker room. The Tigers made several runs during the second half to close the gap, but just couldn't maintain enough consistency with their poor shooting to finish the deal. K.K. Hodges from Lyon dominated the game with 28 points and 10 rebounds and the Tigers had no answer for her inside.
"We were a little short-handed, with Tanya and Nastia slowed by injuries and illness," said Coach Gary Bays. I was pleased with the effort of our players and if we could have hit a few more shots, we might have had a different outcome."
Brenau, which has played seven of their first 10 games on the road, will head to Tennessee on Monday to take on Tennessee Wesleyan, who is always tough to beat on their court.
