Southern Wesleyan Shoots Down Brenau
February 2, 2011
Gainesville, Ga - Freshman Tala Black (Marietta) scored a team high 13 points, including 3-6 from behind the arc, but it wasn't enough as the Brenau basketball team (10-9, 2-6) lost to Southern Wesleyan 69-57 in SSAC action at the Brenau gym. Sophomore Nikki Reed (Atlanta) was the only other Tigers player in double figures with 10.
Sophomore captain Gabby Harvey (Lilburn) had a big game for Brenau, leading the way with nine rebounds, passing out a season high eight assists and coming up with three steals. Freshman Brittney Wiley (Royston) was solid, as usual, with nine points, four assists and six steals. Sophomore Jasmyn Farmer came off the bench to score six points for her best performance at Brenau. Janaye Gillard led the way for the Warriors with 18 points and nine rebounds.
The Tigers got off to a rough start, falling behind 9-2, before coming back to close the gap to 33-31 at the half. Statistically the game was even in the first half, with the Tigers hitting .419 from the field and the Warriors shooting at a .464 clip. The second half was a different story, with SWU firing at a .577 clip and the Tigers able to manage only .286. Southern Wesleyan opened up an 18 point lead at the midpoint of the half, before Brenau roared back to close to within six before the Warriors pullled away for the win.
"We had plenty of chances, but just couldn't find the basket in the second half," said Coach Gary Bays. "I never felt like we got into a rhythm on offense and we missed so many layups. We weren't able to shut them down at the defensive end when we needed to and they made the shots they had to."
The Tigers will travel to Brewton Parker on Thursday to try and get back on the winning track.
