SSAC Recognizes Basketball With All-Conference Awards
This past week, the Southern States Athletic Conference announced their choices for the 2011 Basketball All-Conference Awards. Gabby Harvey, a sophomore forward from Lilburn, Georgia, was named a member of the All-Divisional Team, as well as, a member of the Musco Lighting Champions of Character Team. Harvey led the Golden Tigers this season by averaging 8 rebounds and 2 steals per game. At the end of the season, Harvey was ranked 25th in the nation, for offensive rebounds.
Furthermore, Brenau University had Tatiana Khudiakova and Brittney Wiley named to the SSAC All-Freshman Team. Khudiakova, a 6'2 post player from Moscow, Russia, helped the team defensively in blocks, which allowed her to finish the season as one of the premier blockers in the conference, totaling 41 blocks in her first season alone. Wiley, a 5'2 guard from Royston, Georgia, contributed to the offense with her passing skills, by collecting 76 assists in her first season.
Jasmyn Farmer and Sarah Ward were also recognized by the SSAC for their achievements in the classroom. Both Farmer, a sophomore majoring in Business Administration, and Ward, a sophomore majoring in Biology, were named to the SSAC All-Academic Team because they were able to maintain a 3.25 grade point average or higher (after 24 semester hours), while also playing competitively within the conference.
"Gabby has had a great first season. Her rebounding and defensive skills are exceptional, and she is an exemplary leader on and off the court" commented Assistant Basketball Coach, Beth Henson. "Brittney and Tatiana have had outstanding freshmen seasons. They both have unbelievable potential and play with so much heart."
