Golden Tigers Battle Warhawks in SSAC Action
The Golden Tigers fell in their first home contest of 2012 in a tough, intense battle against conference opponent Auburn University Montgomery, AL.
Brenau (overall 7-8, SSAC 1-4) started the game off in great form, commanding an immediate 5-0 lead in the first two minutes, and leading by 8 at the 17:00 mark. AUM (overall 7-7, SSAC 2-3) battled back, yet the Tigers remained in possession of the lead for the remainder of the period, going into halftime with a 12-point lead at 35-23. Brenau led for almost the entire second period, but AUM slowly crept back into the game to tie it at the very end of the half on two made free throws by Courtney Thacker. In the first OT, Brenau led by as many as 10 points at the 3:00 mark, yet AUM fought their way back once again to tie at the very end of the period on a long-range 3-pointer. The second OT showed AUM in command of the lead for the rest of the game, though the Tigers battled valiantly until the buzzer, losing a tough fight with a score of 89-91.Leading all scorers tonight was AUM's Keisha Moore with 33 points. Other contributors for AUM were Areial Woods with 16 points, and Marren Schwartz with 14 rebounds. Brenau won the battle of the boards once again with 50 to AUM's 40, and also had 15 team steals. The Tigers were led by junior Nikki Reed, who recorded another double-double with 23 points, 11 rebounds, 5 steals, and 3 assists. Sophomore Brittney Wiley chipped in 21 points along with stellar free-throw shooting at 15-18, in addition to 4 steals. Sophomore Raven Crawford and junior Gabby Harvey also pulled down 10 rebounds each.
The Golden Tigers will travel to Brewton-Parker on Monday, followed by a home contest against Southern Poly at 2:00 onSaturday, January 14.
