Brenau Falls to Coastal Georgia
The Brenau Golden Tigers continued their slide, losing to the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners by a score of 79-57.
In the first five minutes, the Golden Tigers pounced on the Mariners, jumping out to a 9-2 lead. An offensive rebound and put back by senior forward Gabby Harvey (Lilburn, Ga.) and a nice post move from Olivia Williams (Hiram, Ga.) stretched the Brenau lead to 17-7 at the halfway mark in the first half.
However, missed opportunities hurt the Golden Tigers' chances of extending their 10 point lead as the team missed nine layups and putbacks in the next ten minutes. As Brenau's offense cooled, the Mariners heated up, taking a six point lead going into halftime.
In the second half, the Mariners continued their hot streak, stretching their lead to twelve points at the ten minute mark. Although the Tigers' shooting improved markedly in the 2nd half at 42%, Coastal Georgia matched that shooting, and slowly pulled away.
"Our effort and execution are still there. I cannot fault our players on how hard they are playing" said Coach Kris Stewart. "We are getting very good shots, but we cannot seem to get them to fall. We had two very good performances from Harvey and Williams, but as a team, we just didn't get the easy shots to fall. Coastal is a very big and athletic team but I thought we were in good position to win. We just missed the easy shots".
Harvey led the Golden Tigers in scoring with 19 points. Williams notched a career-high with 17 points and added 6 rebounds. Senior Nikki Reed (Atlanta) scored her 1,000 career point as she chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.
Coastal Georgia was led by Janele Tucker's game high 23 points.
The Golden Tigers continue their tough schedule by facing Truett-McConnell College on Thursday night in Cleveland, Ga.
