Brenau Basketball Beats Barons in SSAC Action
The Brenau Golden Tigers basketball team hit the hardwood looking to build off of last week's victory, taking on Brewton Parker College in another SSAC battle.
From the tip, both teams appeared evenly matched as the score remained close. At the five minute mark in the second half, senior Nikki Reed (Atlanta, Ga.) scored on a strong post move to the basket, while fellow senior Gabby Harvey (Lilburn, Ga.) grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to take a 30-27 lead into the half.
The second half was a different story as hot shooting from the Golden Tigers guards led the charge. In the first three minutes of the second half, Brenau's guards started to find their shooting range as junior Brittney Wiley (Royston, Ga.) knocked down two 3 pointers, while junior Tala Black knocked down another 3 pointer to cap an 11-2 run.
The Barons fought back, led by guard Brianna Webb's back to back three pointers, cutting the Brenau lead to five points with less than six minutes to go. But strong inside play from senior post Olivia Williams (Hiram, Ga.) sealed the Brenau victory as she recorded six points and two offensive rebounds in a two minute stretch to seal the game for the Golden Tigers.
Brenau shot a blistering 58% in the second half and 46% for the game, while Brewton Parker shot 40% overall.
The Golden Tigers were led by Harvey's 25 points on 12-19 shooting. Harvey, the NAIA leader in rebounds per game, snagged 20 rebounds to give her 13 double-doubles this season. Wiley followed with 9 points, while Black and senior Sarah Ward scored 8 each.
Brewton Parker was led by Brianna Webb's 25 points.
Brenau continues their conference slate, traveling to Cleveland, Tennessee on Thursday to face #7 ranked Lee University.
