Brenau Cools Off the Fire
A hot-shooting first half and a strong defensive effort propelled the Brenau Golden Tigers basketball team to a 69-49 win over Southeastern (FL) University on Friday.
In the first half, Brittney Wiley (Royston, Ga.) scored 13 of her game high 18 points, shooting a perfect 4-4 from the field and 3-3 in 3 point attempts. Junior Jasmine Butler (Gainesville, Ga.) added 10 first half points to help give the Golden Tigers a 44-26 lead at intermission.
The Fire, however, made a quick 7-0 run to open the second half to cut the Brenau lead to 11. However, freshman Quinnesha Turner (Winterville, Ga.) poured in a 10 of her career-best 12 points in the second half to keep Southeastern at bay.
The Golden Tigers shot a blistering 54% in the first half and 38% for the game. The defense held Southeastern to 24% shooting.
"I am very pleased with our improvement from game to game. We are getting a lot of young players more experience and I can see us improving," said head coach Kris Stewart. "Today, we moved the ball well, shot the ball well and executed the game plan perfectly. It was an excellent team effort".
Butler finished the game with 12 points and seven rebounds. The Fire were led by Rachel Turner's 12 points.
The Golden Tigers return for day two of the Emmanuel Classic today at 1 pm when they take on Warner (FL.) Southern University.
