Basketball Captures First Conference Win
In the first game of the SSAC schedule, the Brenau Golden Tigers basketball team captured their first conference win and third win in a row, defeating the William Carey Crusaders, 59-48.
In the first half, neither team took advantage as the score remained very close throughout. Brenau converted 18 of 19 free throws to take a 30-28 lead into the break.
In the second half, the game stayed within five points and had multiple lead changes. In the last five minutes, the Golden Tigers took control as back-to-back baskets from Quinnesha Turner (Winterville, Ga.) and Jasmine Butler (Gainesville, Ga.) gave Brenau an eight point lead. A driving layup by Anela Durmic (Grayson, Ga.) increased the Golden Tiger lead to ten points with less than two minutes to play to clinch the win.
Jasmine Butler led all scorers with 14 points. The junior forward also added a season high 15 rebounds. Durmic scored a career-high 12 points, with 10 coming in the second half. Senior guard Brittney Wiley (Royston, Ga.) added 11.
The Crusaders were led by Vechatita Bonner's 13 points.
The Golden Tigers shot 27 of 34 (79%) from the foul line and dominated the boards, outrebounding the Crusaders 41-27.
Brenau next plays on Saturday when they host conference newcomer Blue Mountain College at 3 pm eastern.
