Golden Tigers Fall In Conference Play
January 11, 2014
A furious comeback fell short as the Brenau University Golden Tigers basketball team lost a close conference game, falling to the Martin Methodist RedHawks by the score of 67-55 on Friday night.
In the opening ten minutes the Golden Tigers struggled from the floor as the RedHawks knocked down three consecutive three pointers to take an early 23-6 lead. Back-to-back driving baskets from senior guard Anela Durmic (Grayson, Ga.) helped to cut into the deficit. The team shooting woes continued, however, as the Golden Tigers shot 8-25 from the floor in the opening half and went into the half down 36-25.
In the second half, the Golden Tigers found their stroke as Claire Zimmerman (Woodstock, Ga.) nailed Brenau's first three pointer of the half. With just over four minutes to play, senior Brittney Wiley (Royston, Ga.) hit another three pointer and sophomore Jasmine Williams (Palmetto, Ga.) scored on a driving layup to cut the Martin Methodist lead to 57-50. The Golden Tigers got three consecutive defensive stops, but failed to capitalize on their next three possessions and couldn't close the gap.
Anela Durmic scored a career high 14 points to lead Brenau. Wiley chipped in 7 points, while Jasmine Butler added 7 points and 6 rebounds.
Nina Mills led Martin Methodist with 18 points.
The Golden Tigers (6-6 overall, 2-3 conference) shot 17-63 (27%) from the floor while the RedHawks were 22-56 (39%).
Brenau returns to the hardwood on Saturday when play host to #10 Bethel University at 3 pm.
