#10 Bethel Slips Past Brenau
January 12, 2014
The Brenau Golden Tigers basketball team gave #10 ranked Bethel University Wildcats a tough test but ultimately came up short by a score of 72-60.
In a close first half, Brenau played tough defense, holding the Wildcats to 11-34 shooting. Sophomore Kalin Williams scored 11 of her 18 points in the first half to keep the margin close, while junior Jasmine Butler (Gainesville, Ga.) also played a solid first half, adding seven points and eight rebounds in the opening stanza to keep the score at 34-30.
In the opening minute of the second half, the Wildcats went on a quick 7-0 to jump ahead 41-30. However, the Golden Tigers answered as freshman post Nekeia Brown was fouled on a made basket to cut into the Wildcats lead. Two three pointers by senior Brittney Wiley closed the gap late, but Bethel hit a clutch 3-pointer in the last two minutes to capture the win.
Wiley and Williams led the Golden Tigers with 18 points each. Butler contributed 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Wiley also became Brenau's all-time leading scorer with 1187 career points, breaking the mark set by former Golden Tiger Ashley Hagans who previously held the mark with 1181 points.
"I am very proud of how our team competed tonight against a top-10 opponent," said head coach Kris Stewart. "We were close all night and really played hard, but came up just short. We are improving daily and I have faith that we will continue to do so. Also, congratulations to Brittney Wiley for breaking the school record in career scoring. She has had a very remarkable career here at Brenau".
The Golden Tigers shot 22-63 (35%) on the night, while the Wildcats shot 26-62 (42%).
The loss drops the Golden Tigers to 6-7 (2-4 conference) on the year.
Brenau continues their conference slate when they travel to Brewton-Parker (Ga.) College on Thursday for a 5:30 tip.
