Golden Tigers Roar Past Barons
A hot shooting first half and an opportunistic defensive performance propelled the Brenau Golden Tigers basketball team past Brewton Parker (Ga.) 68-58 on Thursday night.
In the first half, the game stayed close for the first ten minutes until sophomore Claire Zimmerman (Woodstock, Ga.) knocked down her first three point attempt to give the Golden Tigers a four point lead. After a steal, Brittney Wiley found Zimmerman on the wing for another three point basket. Zimmerman continued her torrid shooting, pouring in two more three pointers in the half to help stretch the Golden Tiger lead to 18.
Senior Kaitlin Fleming (Mt. Airy, Ga.) added to the hot shooting with a three pointer of her own, while a steal and layup by freshman Quinnesha Turner (Winterville, Ga.) increased the Golden Tiger lead to 18.
The Golden Tiger defense capitalized on 31 turnovers by the Barons and never trailed in the game.
"I thought we played a nice team game, with everyone contributing to the win. We got 28 points from our bench, which is indicative of how hard our team is working," said head coach Kris Stewart. "Getting road conference wins are important and even though we had some players out tonight, we had some other players step up and contribute".
Brenau (7-7 overall, 3-4 conference) had four players in double figures, led by Jasmine Butler's 17 points and seven rebounds. Zimmerman added career high 12 points, while freshman Nekeia Brown (Danielsville, Ga.) and Jasmine Williams added 11 each.
Brewton Parker was led by Antonise Harper's game high 19 points.
The Golden Tigers continue their conference slate when they host Southern Wesleyan (S.C.) University at 2 pm on Saturday.
