Golden Tigers Overwhelm Warriors
After a tight first half, the Brenau Golden Tigers basketball team used a 23-0 run to streak past Southern Wesleyan (S.C.) University 78-51 on Saturday.
In the first half, both teams traded baskets though out the half with neither team taking control. Junior Jasmine Butler (Gainesville, Ga.) scored 10 first half points to give the Golden Tigers a 36-34 edge going into halftime.
In the second half, the Brenau defense shut down the Southern Wesleyan offense, holding the high scoring Warriors scoreless for the first 12 minutes of the half. In addition to a strong defensive effort, the Golden Tigers shot a blistering 64% in the second half to capture their 8th win of the season.
"I am very happy with our execution and effort today," said head coach Kris Stewart. "We played very hard and got a good conference win. I thought we played a complete game today and got an outstanding team performance."
Freshman Nekeia Brown (Danielsville, Ga.) led all scorers with a career-high 21 points and eight rebounds. Jasmine Butler added 19 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Kalin Williams added 16 points and seven assists.
Southern Wesleyan was led by Christiana Perkins with 14 points.
The Golden Tigers shot 56% for the game, while the Warriors shot 25% from the floor.
Brenau (8-7, 4-4 SSAC) next hosts non-conference opponent Allen University on Tuesday at 5:30.
