Golden Tigers Win Ninth Game
In a non-conference matchup, the Brenau University Golden Tigers basketball team squeezed past Allen University 67-59 on Tuesday.
In the first half, the Golden Tigers stormed out to an early twelve point lead as Brittney Wiley (Royston, Ga.) and Claire Zimmerman (Woodstock, Georgia) hit two three pointers each. Brenau held the Yellow Jackets at bay throughout the remainder of the half to carry a 33-23 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Brenau offense cooled off, shooting a paltry 29% and allowing Allen to tie the game at 53-53 with five minutes remaining. However a clutch basket by junior forward Jasmine Butler (Gainesville, Ga.) and two free throws by sophomore guard Kalin Williams (Palmetto, Ga.) sealed the victory for the Golden Tigers.
"We executed well and got quality shots, but struggled to finish them," said head coach Kris Stewart. "However, the team kept working and hit shots and free throws down the stretch. I am proud of how the younger players helped contribute to the win".
The Golden Tigers shot 19-59 (32%) from the field and 25-36 (69%) from the foul line. Allen was 20-62 (32%) and 12-22 (55%) from the charity stripe.
Jasmine Butler led the Golden Tigers with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Kalin Williams added 10 points and eight rebounds. Jasmine Williams (Palmetto, Ga.) added nine points and four rebounds while freshman Maegan Kenimer (Gainesville, Ga.) added a career high six points and four rebounds.
Allen was led by Latoya Jones who had a game-high 18 points.
The Golden Tigers (9-7, 4-4 SSAC) return to the hardwood on Thursday when they host Faulkner (Ala.) University at 6:00 pm in an SSAC matchup.
