Hornets Buzz Past Golden Tigers
Southern Poly University hit two late three pointers down the stretch to pull away from the Brenau Golden Tigers 80-63 on Saturday.
Brenau started quickly, jumping ahead of the Hornets and taking an eight point lead into the eleven minute mark. Hot shooting from Jasmine Butler (Gainesville, Ga.) helped propel the Golden Tigers to their early lead as the junior forward scored 18 points in the first half. However, Butler found foul trouble at the nine minute mark and Southern Poly went on a 26-4 run to take control. The Golden Tigers closed the deficit to 40-31 after a late half three pointer by Brittney Wiley (Royston, Ga.).
The Golden Tigers cut the Hornet lead to six points as senior Anela Durmic (Grayson, Ga.) scored 15 of her career high 17 in the second half to lead the charge. With three minutes to go, Wiley cut the deficit to four points, but her basket was waived off for a charging call. The Hornets hit a clutch three pointer to extend the lead, and ultimately take the win.
"Our team really competed tonight and gave Southern Poly a tough game," said head coach Kris Stewart. "We jumped out early and played well, but foul trouble slowed us down in the first half. The team rallied in the second half and we had a chance to make it a four point game. It was another excellent effort and we are so very close to breaking out".
Butler led the Golden Tigers with 20 points and six rebounds. Durmic added 17 points and five rebounds, while Wiley added 12.
Southern Poly was led by Sarah Ogoke's game high 26 points.
Brenau (9-9, 4-6 SSAC) hosts Morris (S.C.) College on Tuesday in a non-conference matchup before continuing their conference slate. Game time is at 6 pm.
