Warhawks Fly Past Golden Tigers
The Brenau Golden Tigers lost a tough SSAC conference game versus Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.) University 78-69 on Thursday.
In the first half, senior Brittney Wiley (Royson, Ga.) hit three early threes to keep pace with the Warhawks, while sophomore Claire Zimmerman (Woodstock, Ga.) nailed another three point shot to give Brenau the lead. After a short jumper from sophomore Kalin Williams (Palmetto, Ga.), the Golden Tigers took a 32-30 lead into halftime.
In the second half, both teams battled early with neither team seizing control of the game. Junior Jasmine Butler scored on an offensive put back to keep the game close, but the Golden Tigers missed four consecutive layups to find themselves in a five point deficit with five minutes to go. With less than two minutes to play, Brenau missed a three pointer that would have cut the lead to two. AUM knocked down foul shots in the last minute to extend their lead and capture the win.
"We played very well in the first half and knocked down shots," said head coach Kris Stewart. "We missed several layups, which really took away our momentum. We also had several moments where we would deflect a ball or block a shot, only to have the ball bounce into an AUM players hands. I cannot fault our effort, but we have to finish open shots".
Kalin Williams led Brenau with 15 points and five rebounds. Wiley added 14, while Butler added 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Kaylan Withrow led AUM with 24 points.
The Golden Tigers shot 38% for the game while the Warhawks shot 43%. Brenau was 12-20 from the foul line, while AUM was 25-40 from the line.
Brenau (11-13, 6-10 SSAC) next hosts College of Coastal Georgia on Saturday for a 2 pm tipoff.
