Golden Tigers Basketball Roars Past Warhawks
The Brenau basketball team used a balanced attack and a huge second half to run past visiting Auburn-Montgomery (Ala.) University in an SSAC matchup on Friday.
In the first half, neither team seized control as the lead changed nine times. Sophomore Briah Woods (SO/Acworth, Ga.) came out hot, scoring consecutive baskets to keep the score close. Junior Claire Zimmerman (JR/Woodstock, Ga.) nailed a deep three-pointer to give the Golden Tigers a lead, while junior post Maegan Kenimer (SO/Gainesville, Ga.) scored a basket off an offensive rebound to take a 34-32 point lead into the half.
In the second half, Brenau continued their hot shooting as Alyssa Nichelson (JR/Jasper, Ga.) nailed a contested three-pointer to increase the lead. The Golden Tigers continued to pour it on as Kalin Williams (JR/Palmetto, Ga.) scored a short jumper to give Brenau a 19 point lead, their largest of the game.
The Warhawks made a furious rally, cutting the lead to 12 late, but junior post Nekeia Brown (SO/Danielsville, Ga.) finished a layup to secure the win for the Golden Tigers.
Kenimer led Brenau with a career-high 15 points. Williams added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Woods added 12.
"This game was an all-around team effort," said head coach Kris Stewart. "Our team played together, played tough and really competed against an excellent opponent. I am so proud of their performance".
Gabby Brown led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Brenau (6-6 overall, 3-3 SSAC) next travels to Columbia, S.C. to take on non-conference Columbia International University at 6:00 pm.
