Defense Propels Golden Tigers Past Voorhees
The Brenau basketball team, propelled by a huge second half offensive performance, blew past Voorhees (S.C) College 73-57 on Tuesday in Gainesville.
In the first half, the Golden Tigers struggled to find any rhythm offensively, scoring only 11 first quarter points. In the second quarter, sophomore Autumn Dodson scored on consecutive possessions to help cut the deficit to six. Senior Jasmine Williams then scored on an offensive put back with under a minute remaining in the half to keep the Golden Tigers close as Voorhees took 30-26 lead into the half.
After intermission, the Golden Tigers defense started the rally as Brenau scored off three straight steal to take the lead. Brenau continued to find the basket as Quinnesha Turner found Williams for a long jumper to increase the lead to eight, and then freshman Lia Thomas knocked down a runner to increase the lead to double-digits.
Dominique Patrick led Brenau with 22 points, six assists and six rebounds, while Turner added 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Dodson chipped in 12 points, while junior post Nekeia Brown added 10 points and eight rebounds. Kalin Williams also added a game-high 10 rebounds.
Danielle McFadden led Voorhees with 17 points.
"Although we struggled in the first half, I am very proud of how our team played defense in the second half," said head coach Kris Stewart. "We scored 47 points in the second half which was due to our defense and rebounding. I couldn't be more pleased with how we responded after halftime. It was a very good team win!"
Brenau outshot Voorhees 47% (29-62) to 28% (17-61) from the floor.
The Golden Tigers (2-1) next host Webber International (Fla.) University on Saturday at 4 pm eastern. The Brenau junior varsity squad will also play the Webber Junior Varsity team at 2 pm before the varsity game.
