Junior Varsity Basketball Wins Two
The Brenau junior varsity squad extended their undefeated streak to three games with wins over Truett-McConnell (Ga.) College 82-54 and Webber International (Fla.) 82-78 last week.
In rematch of the season opener, the Golden Tigers rushed out to a commanding 21-4 first quarter lead over Truett-McConnell. Brenau kept the lead at 38-26 going into intermission as Kaylyn Brooks and Lia Thomas combined for 16 first half points.
The Golden Tigers continued to keep the Bears in the second half as Kensi Gillespie nailed a three-pointer to extend the lead to 20 points. Brenau led by as much as 30 points en route to their second win of the year.
Thomas led all scorers with 17 points, while Kindole Pettway added 12 points. Brooks chipped in 10 points, while Jalyn Brown added a season-high nine points.
Against Webber, the Golden Tigers again jumped out to an early 23-15 behind seven early points from Brooks. However, Webber found their offensive rhythm and took a 35-32 lead into the half.
In the second half, neither team could take full control, trading baskets throughout the third and fourth quarters. With just over a minute remaining in regulation and with Webber leading 71-68, Angela Jones knocked down a three pointer to tie the game at 71-71. After a Webber miss, Brenau called timeout with six seconds remaining to advance the ball. Out of the time out, Brooks drove the lane, but missed. Skye Overby pulled down the rebound but missed the put back to send the game into overtime.
In overtime, Brenau trailed 78-76 with just under two minutes remaining when Brooks found Gillespie for the go-ahead three-pointer to give the Golden Tigers the lead and seal the game.
Brooks led all scorers with 24 points, while Thomas added 20. Pettway also added 16 points to the win.
Brenau (3-0) next travels to Georgia Northwest Technical College for a 5:00 pm eastern tipoff in Rossville, Ga.
