Basketball Wins Fifth Straight
The Brenau basketball team extended its winning streak to five games with a 63-58 win over conference for William Carey (Miss.) College on Saturday in Gainesville.
The Golden Tigers jumped out to a commanding first quarter lead as Dominique Patrick found Kalin Williams for a driving layup for a 9-5 lead. After a Quinnesha Turner free throw, Anikee Combee scored in the paint to increase the lead to 11-5. Sophomore Autumn Dodson added to the lead with a steal and three point play to make the score 18-7 and close out the first quarter.
William Carey, however, came out in the second period with aggressive play as the Crusaders outscored the Golden Tigers 19-11 to make the halftime score 29-26.
In the third quarter, neither team could seize advantage as the game stayed close throughout the period. In the fourth quarter, William Carey tied up the game late, but a Claire Zimmerman three-pointer gave the Golden Tigers a three point lead. Briah Woods added a jumper in the lane with under three minutes to play to increase the lead to five, then post Nekeia Brown scored off of an offensive rebound to seal the game.
"This was a tough conference win," said head coach Kris Stewart. "Claire Zimmerman's fourth quarter three-pointer gave us some momentum late and our guards just kept attacking and wouldn't settle. I am so pleased with how well we have grown as a team!"
The Golden Tigers were led by Turner's 14 points and six rebounds, while Kalin Williams added 13.
Alyson Johnson led the Crusaders with a game-high 17 points.
Brenau (5-1 overall, 2-0 SSAC) takes a break for finals before traveling to non-conference opponent Reinhardt (Ga.) University on December 8th.
