Basketball Drops Two SSAC Road Games
The Brenau basketball team dropped a pair of Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) road games against William Carey (Miss.) and Blue Mountain (Miss.) this past weekend.
Against William Carey, the Golden Tigers found themselves in a 36-21 halftime deficit after struggling from the floor in the first two periods. After halftime, the Golden Tigers went on a 10-0 run to start the second half to cut the lead to five. Sydney Haas scored six of her eight points during the run; however, Brenau was unable to hold on falling 71-47.
Autumn Dodson led the Golden Tigers 18 points, while Haas added eight points and four rebounds.
In the second game against Blue Mountain, Dodson knocked down two three pointers and two foul shots in the first period the help the Golden Tigers take an 18-16 lead. However, the second quarter had the Toppers retake the lead and close the half with a 41-30 advantage.
After intermission, Brenau found their stride as Kalin Williams scored on a driving layup to start the run, while Dodson and Briah Woods added three pointers to cut the deficit to 51-48 at the end of three periods.
In the fourth quarter, Brenau took the lead late as Dominique Patrick hit two free throws, but the Toppers responded with a three point basket to regain the lead. Dodson knocked down her fourth three pointer of the contest to cut the lead to one late, but Brenau missed a shot with under a minute remaining to fall 68-63.
"We are struggling right now, but this team showed a lot of resilience in a tough road game," said head coach Kris Stewart. "We really found our stride in the second half against Blue Mountain but they hit one more shot than we did. We had a chance to win it and missed a shot at the rim. I have no doubt that we will find our rhythm again and finish strong."
Dodson again led the squad with 18 points, while Woods added 12 points and seven rebounds.
Brenau (7-9, 2-6 SSAC) next travels to Middle Georgia College for an SSAC road matchup at 2 pm in Cochran, Ga.
