Defense Leads Basketball Past Coastal Georgia
A strong defensive performance helped the Brenau basketball team slip by Southern States Athletic Conference rival Coastal Georgia 48-41 on Thursday in Gainesville.
After a lackluster first quarter where neither team could find an offensive rhythm, Brenau finally found their shooting stroke as senior Claire Zimmerman and junior Briah Woods each knocked down three pointers to cut into the Coastal lead. However, the Mariners responded with late run to take a 24-19 lead into the half.
In the third quarter, both teams continued to stay close with neither team taking full control. Senior Jasmine Williams knocked down two jumpers in the period, while an Anikee Combee floater cut the Mariner lead to 32-31 going into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter, early baskets from Dominique Patrick and Sydney Haas finally gave Brenau the lead late. After holding a three point lead, Woods nailed a corner three-pointer to increase the lead to six and seal the victory.
"It took a while for us to find out offense, but we played very sound defense and that carried us to the win," said head coach Kris Stewart. "I am proud of how our team played disciplined on defense and how we rebounded in the second half. This was a good win for us."
Woods led all scorers with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Kalin Williams added 10 points.
Anissa Toumi led the Mariners with 11 points.
Brenau (9-9 overall, 4-6 SSAC) next play host to Brewton Parker College on Saturday at 2 pm eastern.
